Here is the news that most people were expecting. For the third weekend in a row, to wrap up their work on the Irene Hixon Whitney Pedestrian Bridge, I-94 is closing from I-394 to I-35W in Minneapolis. Traffic will be diverted to I-694, I-35W, and Highway 280. Although this is the last time drivers will see I-94 close in May, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said there will be more closures coming to the interstate sometime this summer. Hennepin/Lyndale Avenue is closing again this weekend too from Dunwoody Boulevard to Oak Grove Street.

Now the rest of the story. The Interstate 35W northbound "flyover" ramp to Interstate 94 westbound is closing Tonight(Friday), starting at 10 p.m., until the fall of 2021.

Crews are taking down the ramp this weekend as part of a reconstruction project. Because of that,  no traffic will be able to use Highway 65 in and out of downtown Minneapolis this weekend. The official detour for this project will take people to 3rd Avenue and 4th Street to the I-35W southbound entrance ramp. Northbound I-35W traffic will continue north and use the 3rd Street exit. There's a long detour set up for drivers who normally take the flyover ramp: Highway 62, Highway 100, Highway 55, and back to I-94.

When this project is completed, traffic will no longer exit to the right to reach I-94 westbound. Instead, motorists will merge on the left side and have a dedicated lane along I-94 through the Lowry Hill Tunnel.

As they say in infomercials, but wait there's more.  If you're traveling in the south metro this weekend, watch out for alternating lane closures on Highway 13 in Savage. Crews will be working between Connelly Parkway and Highway 101 starting at 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.
