From baseball and softball to auto racing and golf, July is still a busy month for the local sports fan.

Owatonna American Legion and VFW baseball teams will enter district playoff action in July. The VFW team qualified for their first state tournament appearance one year ago. Many of those players are now on the Legion team.

The Owatonna Aces amateur baseball club will be looking for a return trip to the state tournament this summer. The regular season continues through the end of July with playoffs in August.

Owatonna's U-16 fast pitch softball team qualified recently for the Northern Nationals tournament to be held in the Twin Cities at the end of July.

If you take the short drive to Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley on Saturday, July 9, you can take in the annual Gopher 50 stock car race. The event highlights the World of Outlaws late model circuit, offering fans a rare chance to catch that class of cars in southern Minnesota. The USRA Modified portion of the night features a number of local drivers. The event is promoted by the Blooming Prairie Lions.

The Ken Bey Football Classic Golf Tournament is Saturday, July 9, at Brooktree. The long-running event raises money for the Owatonna High School football program. The OHS girls basketball golf scramble enters its third year and will be Saturday, July 30, at Brooktree Golf Course as well.

Enjoy the local sports in July. When August arrives it will be time to look ahead on another school year of athletics.
