The National Retail Federation says the average person will spend $142, which is $8 more than last year. If this is true, I really am a tightwad. Total spending on Valentine's is expected to reach $18.9 billion.

The survey reports just over 53 percent will buy candy. I usually buy chocolates or some type of candy for my wife. She can't eat it all, so she shares with me. She's diabetic. It's the thought that counts though, right?

One in five people will spend $5 on their pet this Valentine's Day.

Engaged couples spend more on their sweethearts than married people. That makes sense. If you've got the fish in the boat, why try to set the hook? Engaged Americans will spend $154 compared to married folks, who will spend, on average, $136 this Valentine's Day.

Have a happy Valentine's Day!
