Most of you know I get a big kick out of turning off the technology sometimes and slipping into the character of a buckskinner of the 1800s. My first chance this year is Memorial Day weekend, and I wanted to tell you about it, because you can check it out, too.

The Cannon River Rendezvous is Friday through Monday at the Whitson Family Farm, which is five miles west of Cannon Falls on Highway 19. Look for the TeePee signs.

Experience a fur trade encampment typical of the period from 1750-1840 and visit with reenactors portraying the many unique characters that gathered after a winter of trapping to trade goods, test their skills and swap tall tales with their friends. Enjoy demonstrations of period skills and lifestyles, including black powder shooting competitions, primitive archery and tomahawk-throwing contests, and campfire cooking. The public is invited to try their hand at many of these activities, including shooting. Visit the merchants on "Traders’ Row.” Smell the aroma of food cooking. Hear the sounds of laughter and singing, music of the time, and children playing games as they did in the day.

The encampment is open to the public from 10AM to 4PM Saturday and Sunday, May 28 and 29, and 10AM to 3PM Monday, May 30, with a memorial service at 1PM Monday. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for ages 12-16, $5 for seniors older than 60, and free for children younger than 12.

Parking is free. So come out and take a little trip into the past. That's where I'll be. If you remember my picture from the website and you recognize me, feel free to say hi!
