Section 1 fared well at the state girls basketball tournament with Goodhue and Plainview-Elgin-Millville winning championships and Winona finishing second on Saturday.

Goodhue won the Class A championship in dominating fashion with an 89-64 win over Maranatha Christian Academy in a game broadcast and reported on by KDHL radio's Gordy Kosfeld. The Wildcats won their first state girls basketball title while winning by an average of 31 points over the three games. The Goodhue boys just finished as the state runner-up a week ago.

Plainview-Elgin-Millville captured their first state title in their first appearance by whipping New London-Spicer in the title tilt 72-42. It's the second straight Class AA championship for Section 1AA as Dover-Eyota took it last year.

Winona lost the Minnesota State High School League Class AAA title game Saturday at Williams Arena 51-43 to Holy Angels. For the Stars it was their second championship to go along with the 1975 title in the first state girls basketball tournament. Winona was the No. 2 seed in the tournament.

The Class AAAA championship went to Minnetonka for their first girls basketball title in school history, upsetting top-seed Hopkins 61-52.

The girls tournament brought the winter sports season to a close in Minnesota. Spring sports practice is starting across the state with seasons to open in early April.
