‘Ghost in the Shell’ Finds a Director in Rupert Sanders

Though Magna (Japanese comic books) have long been a solid cult industry in America, Hollywood has had no luck so far in bringing those comics to the big screen (for instance: ‘Akira‘). But that luck may have changed as DreamWorks now has plans to adapt ‘Ghost in the Shell’ for the big screen, with ‘Snow White and the Huntsman‘ director Rupert Sanders behind the helm.

According to Deadline, there’s a finished script by William Wheeler (who previously wrote ‘The Hoax’), and there are producers on board, while they also note that this project has driven by Steven Spielberg‘s passion for the material, which is about a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that fights against cyber-terrorists.The material was previous adapted into an animated film that spawned a sequel.

Currently Sanders has about four other titles on his plate — though none appear to be a follow up to ‘Snow White and the Huntsman,’ which was supposed to have a sequel or spin-off at one point — but considering the talent behind this picture, we wouldn’t be surprised if this is his next film, as it looks ready to be made. If so, expect an Americanized ‘Ghost in the Shell’ sometime in 2016.
