Today, Sept. 27, is Minnesota Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day. Flags will flown at half-staff. Also, National Fallen Firefighters Service will be on Sunday, Oct. 4. Across the country, flags will flown at half-staff.

Stop. Drop. Roll. October is Fire Prevention Month and Oct. 4-10 is Fire Prevention Week.

Firefighter Darin Brown will be honored on Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Owatonna Fire Fighter of the Year Banquet hosted by the Owatonna Exchange Club at the Owatonna Eagles Club, 141 E. Rose St. Social at 6PM with dinner and program at 6:30.

Thursday, Oct. 1, is the deadline to buy tickets, which are available at Kottke Jewelers, City Administration Building at West Hills or at the Owatonna Fire Department. Tickets are $20.

Owatonna Fire Department Chili Feed will be Sunday, Oct. 4, from 4-7PM at the fire department. Advance $6 tickets are available at the fire station or from any fire department member or at the door for $8. Proceeds will go to the Firefighter Relief Association and MDA.

Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 4-10. The week, which has been recognized since 1922, commemorates the Great Chicago Fire, which began Oct. 8 and continued into Oct. 9 in 1871, according to National Fire Prevention Protection Association's website.

President Woodrow Wilson in 1920 issued National Fire Prevention Day proclamation.

The theme for 2015 is "Hear The Beep Where You Sleep. Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm!" Some other fire prevention themes include:

  • Be Free From Fear of Fire: 1952
  • Don't Give Fire A Place to Start: 1955-65
