We had a few warm days in March, but it sure has been cold until late last week. With the warmer weather there has been a lot of activity in the field. Manure is being hauled, fertilizer and herbicides are being applied, and over the weekend I saw a few farmers planting corn. Long-term research shows the "sweet spot" for corn planting is April 25 through May 2. Farmers with a lot of acres of corn to plant are already rolling. They probably cannot get all of their acres planted in six or seven days so they would rather plant early.

Farmers with fewer acres of corn to plant are not in a real big rush to plant corn yet. The forecast looks good. However, there is always the concern about rainy weather for a week or two. We all remember how wet it was in 2013. Even though it is early, field conditions for planting are very good. It would be very frustrating to pass up good planting conditions now and then be out of the field for a couple of weeks because it is raining almost every day. That is the tough part of being a farmer. You never know for sure what the weather will be next week or next month.
