Officers from the Faribault Police Department, Rice County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota State Patrol responded to a welfare check call in the 1800 block of Fairway Drive. The caller, according to the release from the Police Department, had been speaking by phone to a resident at that address who had become upset and threatened suicide. Officers had learned that a 61-year-old male had taken pills and was armed with a knife.

Although the subject had been in contact with a helpline, several unsuccessful attempts had been made by officers to contact the subject by phone. Officers continued to try to call for 45 minutes as they approached the residence. The subject then called 911 and allowed officers to enter the residence. He was transported to District One Hospital by North Ambulance.

No criminal charges are pending.
