There will be a number of informational meetings on Thursday, July 28, on Minnesota's buffer law. One of these meetings will be in Blooming Prairie. There will also be a session at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds in Albert Lea from 5-7PM on the 28th.

Minnesota's buffer law establishes new perennial vegetation buffers along rivers, streams, lakes and other waterways. The object of the buffer strips is to protect water from phosphorus, nitrogen and sediment runoff.

The informational sessions will feature officials from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources.

The meeting in Blooming Prairie will run from 1-3PM at the Servicemen's Club on the 28th. It will be hosted locally by the SWCD offices of Mower, Dodge and Steele counties.

Some of the approaching deadlines include a 50-foot average width, 30-foot minimum width buffer in place on lands adjacent to public waters as well as identified and mapped on the buffer map. The deadline for this is November 1, 2017.

A 16.5-foot minimum width buffer musts be in place on lands adjacent to public ditches as identified and mapped on the buffer map. The deadline for this is November 1, 2018.

The public is invited to these public meetings.
