If studio developments in recent years have taught us anything, it’s to expect the unexpected when it comes to reboots and adaptations. From upcoming movies based on video games like Centipede and Tetris to the Jumanji reboot, it’s as if studios are plucking titles from the Least Likely pile (where is my Easy Bake Oven movie already?). The latest movie to get the unexpected reboot treatment is Benji — you know, the feel-good doggy adventure movie from 1974, which many of you probably remember best from its near-constant presence on The Disney Channel in the ’80s and early ’90s.

If there are any major Benji fans among you, however, you’ll be pleased to know that Brandon Camp — the son of original Benji director Joe Camp — is writing and directing the new reimagining of the family classic. Deadline reports that the younger Camp is teaming up with Blumhouse Productions for the Benji reboot, based on his father’s 1974 film that spawned several sequels (the last of which was released in 2004, surprisingly).

Like the original film, Camp’s Benji reboot will also be a largely independent production via his collaboration with Blumhouse. Joe and Brandon Camp appeared together on The Today Show this week to introduce their new canine hero:

Although Blumhouse is best known for modestly-budgeted horror films and franchises like Insidious, Paranormal Activity and The Purge, they’re also the studio behind the acclaimed indie drama Whiplash, and served as co-producers on HBO’s The Normal Heart. Blumhouse is re-teaming with the premium network for the upcoming 2017 miniseries adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects, starring Amy Adams.
