Steve Goldberg of Steele County Environmental Services was a guest on AM 1390's Talk of the Town. The Household Hazardous Waste Facility is now open for the season at the Steele County Landfill near Bixby. Hours will be 9AM to 3PM Thursdays and the first and third Saturdays from 9AM to noon. You may make an appointment by calling (507) 583-7766.

About 90 percent of the products dropped off are latex/oil-based paints. Other items taken include stains, varnishes, aerosol cans, pesticides and hobby chemicals. There's also a shelf with some products that are still usable such as perhaps a half can of paint or whatever that you may pick up and take home and use.

The Steele County Landfill is open weekdays from 7:30AM to 4:30PM and Saturdays from 8AM to 1PM. You may drop off and recycle your appliances, tires, TVs and computer monitors for a charge. Used oil and oil filters are recycled for free. The landfill still has an estimated life span of 15-20 years left.

Questions about recycling may be directed to (507) 451-5443.
