There were some memorable moments that have come to my mind about baseball and the Minnesota Twins. A good pitching duel, grand slams, inside-the-park home runs, no-hitters, the World Series and the Baseball Hall of Fame. More specifically, the two around-the-horn triple plays that the Twins turned in one game in 1990. That is an MLB record that really stands out.

I am not that into the stats of sports, however, I do remember a scene in "City Slickers" where they do mention players and just rattled off stats around a campfire on the trail.

I know that some past and present players and managers on the Twins are from Minnesota, so here are just a few, according to minnesota.twins.mlb.com.

    Caleb Thielbar #56

Caleb Thielbar was born in Northfield. He has been with the Twins since 2013 and pitched 98.2 innings with a 2.74 ERA and 79 strikeouts. T-bar is in the Triple A affiliate now, but was up recently.

    Jack Morris #47

Our hero from the 1991 Game 7 of the World Series versus the Atlanta Braves is a St. Paul native. Morris started in baseball in 1977 with Detroit, came to Minnesota in 1991, then on to Cleveland in 1994. He has four World Series rings and was an All-Star 12 times.

    Dave Winfield #32

Also a St. Paul native. From davewinfieldhof.com, Winny is one of seven players in the major leagues to reach more than 3,000 hits and more than 450 home runs. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001, the first year he was eligible. According to baseball-reference.com, from 1973-95 Winfield played for the Yankees, Padres, Angels, Twins and the Blue Jays. He was an All-Star 12 times, according to baseballhall.org.

    Glen Perkins #15

Glen Perkins a St. Paul native. Perk is a southpaw and has been with the Twins since 2006. He has "covered all the bases" as a pitcher: starter, reliever, closer. His total stats include 354 games with 574 innings pitched, 3.79 ERA and saved 44.

    Kent Hrbek #14

Kent Hrbek was born in Minneapolis. Herbie played first base and was with the Twins for both World Series championships -- 1987 and 1991. He is also a lefty. I remember during Kirby Puckett's memorial, Hrbek mentioned fans would name their kids after Kirby and farm animals after Hrbek. His #14 was retired in 1995.

    Tom Kelly #10

The hometown for Tom Kelly is Graceville. I found out that is on the western side of the state in Big Stone County and as close to the Dakotas as one can get. TK was a first-time full-time manager for the Twins in 1987 and won the World Series versus the Cardinals, then won the World Series again in 1991. Both times a Cinderella story, last to first.

  • 7

    Joe Mauer #7

Joe Mauer is another St. Paul native. Once a catcher then moved to first base. As a catcher, Mauer won three American League batting titles. Also a lefty.

    Paul Molitor #4

Paul Molitor is also a St. Paul native. Mollie first played in 1978 with Milwaukee, Toronto in 1993 then to the Twins from 1996-98. Molitor started coaching for the Twins in the minor leagues, moving to bench coach and now is the new manager. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004.
