The Oscar nominations were recently announced. Some people are whining because they haven't heard of many of the movies. There is a reason they are nominated. They are good.

My comment is based on the recent history of Best Picture winners. The past seven are all fabulous movies. They might not have enough explosions, super heroes or sex to be among the most popular movies. But in my opinion they are all well worth watching.

This year's list of Best Picture nominees include

  • The Big Short
  • Bridge of Spies
  • Brooklyn
  • Mad Max: Fury Road
  • The Martian
  • The Revenant
  • Room
  • Spotlight

The awards will be presented February 28. That doesn't leave me much time to scout all the nominees. The race is on.

And if you've already seen this year's nominees, check out these winners from past years.

    Argo (2013)

Argo is also (partially) based on fact story. It involves several individuals that escaped from the American embassy in Iran right before it was taken over. It contains a fair amount of humor for a story that really isn't very funny. Ben Afflect, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman and Alan Arkin star.

    The King's Speech (2011)

Another based-on-a-true-story movie, The King's Speech shows it's not easy to talk in public. It is a joy to watch the relationship develop between the king and his speech coach. Colin Firth stars.
