School is still a couple of weeks away, but the 2017-18 sports year began for Owatonna High School on Monday with a 4-3 win for the girls tennis team over Lakeville North. The tightly contested match, which was delayed for a couple of hours due to rain, featured a trio of three-set matches. A second dual against Eden Prairie was rained out.

The Huskies go to Faribault on Tuesday to face the Falcons and Northfield. The first Huskies match starts at 11AM. The home opener is Thursday, August 24, against Austin and Rochester Century at OHS courts at 9AM.

Three other Owatonna sports open their season Thursday, all hosting Farmington. Volleyball plays at 7PM on Kat Kountry 105FM. It will be the Huskies' first home match in two years after water damage to the gym floor last year forced their home matches to be moved to Medford High School.

The soccer teams host a doubleheader with the Tigers at the Lincoln School Soccer Complex. The girls play at 5PM, followed by the boys at 7PM. The OHS boys beat Farmington in last year's section championship match.

Activity tickets are now available for the school year for admission to regular season sporting events and fine arts performances. They can be purchased at the district office and St. Mary's School. The cost for students is $40. Senior citizens 62 and older also pay $40. An individual activity ticket is $90. It is $140 for a husband and wife. Tickets will be sold during picture / schedule pick-up day at the high school Wednesday and Thursday August 23-24. Activity tickets will also be available during the parent / student information day at Owatonna Middle School.
